National palliative care projects providing education

The Australian Government funds a range of national palliative care initiatives and programs primarily focused on education, training, quality improvement and advance care planning. These modules, webinars, workshops, and learning resources support the health and aged care workforces to provide quality palliative care. They are listed below.

Advance Care Planning Australia

Advance Care Planning Australia (ACPA) supports Australians to make the best choices for their future health and care. ACPA provides advice and support on advance care planning across Australia with training and education programs for health and care professionals.

Advance Project

The Advance Project provides practical, evidence-based resources and training that empower aged and primary care professionals to initiate advance care planning and palliative care.

CarerHelp

CarerHelp provides free information, resources and advice, including managing grief and loss, to help when caring for a loved one.

CareSearch

CareSearch provides online access to evidence and evidence-based guidance on palliative care. The CareSearch My Learning modules demonstrate how to find relevant evidence and how to use the evidence resources in CareSearch to make a difference in clinical care.

caring@home

caring@home supports people to be cared for and to die at home if that is their choice. The caring@home education modules for registered nurses and Aboriginal health workers support community-based services to improve symptom control by integrating carers into the multidisciplinary team and supporting them to help manage breakthrough symptoms safely using subcutaneous medicines.

End of Life Directions for Aged Care (ELDAC)

ELDAC provides information, guidance, and resources to health professionals and aged care workers to support palliative care and advance care planning to improve the care of older Australians. Toolkits and learning videos help the aged care workforce build their knowledge and confidence in providing end-of-life care.

End-of-Life Essentials (EOLE)

End-of-Life Essentials provides online education for health professionals on care at the end of life in acute hospitals. The modules develop knowledge and skills to recognise end-of-life issues, to enhance communication strategies, and to gain confidence in caring for patients and their families in acute hospitals at the end of life.

End of Life Law for Clinicians (ELLC)

The End of Life Law for Clinicians courses aim to address current gaps in clinicians’ knowledge of end-of-life law. The courses include an overview of the law and its application to clinical practice, case studies, legal case examples, and self-assessment activities.

Gwandalan

Gwandalan aims to improve access and the quality of palliative care service delivery for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people throughout Australia by providing a suite of tailored education and training materials to support cultural safety within palliative care services.

Indigenous Program of Experience in the Palliative Approach (IPEPA)

IPEPA embeds Australian Indigenous knowledges across all PEPA resources and facilitates two-way learning dedicated to (1) building capacity in the mainstream and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce to deliver culturally responsive palliative care and (2) developing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities’ knowledge of palliative care, their rights, and local services.

LGBTIQ+ Health Australia

LGBTIQ+ Health Australia works with the palliative care sector to provide appropriate services and increase knowledge and awareness of palliative care within LGBTIQ+ communities.

palliAGED

palliAGED is the palliative care evidence and practice information resource for the Australian aged care sector. Providing support for health and care practitioners as well as resource developers, the website also provides trustworthy information for older Australians, their families, and friends.

Palliative Care Curriculum for Undergraduates (PCC4U)

The PCC4U project aims to improve the skill and confidence of the health workforce to work with people with palliative care needs by promoting the integration of palliative care training within all health undergraduate, entry-to-practice, and relevant post-graduate curricula.

Palliative Care ECHO (Extension for Community Health Outcomes)

Palliative Care ECHO is a virtual knowledge-sharing network designed to create a ‘learning loop’ between health professionals with the aim of increasing knowledge, skills, and confidence in primary care health professionals.

Program of Experience in the Palliative Approach (PEPA)

PEPA empowers health professionals to deliver quality end-of-life care. PEPA provides placements in palliative care services for practicing health professionals and palliative approach workshops. Components of this program focus on the care of older people and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Open-access online learning modules are also available with the option to select a set of modules specific to your professional group or work role.

Palliative Care Outcomes Collaboration (PCOC)

PCOC is a national palliative care project funded by the Australian Government Department of Health. PCOC enables palliative care services to embed standardised clinical assessment tools into routine practice.

Pharmaceutical Society of Australia

The ASPIRE Palliative Care Foundation Training Program for Pharmacists is a free, CPD-accredited course for pharmacists working in all areas of practice, developed by Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) and supported by Palliative Care Australia.

Quality of Care Collaborative Australia (QuoCCA)

QuoCCA provides paediatric palliative care education to health professionals in urban, rural, regional, and remote areas who may care for children and young people with palliative and end-of-life care needs.

Talking End of Life

TEL supports carers to help someone with an intellectual disability understand death and dying. Aimed at disability support workers but also helpful for families, health professionals, and educators.
