I had help from palliative nurses… and when it got to the end he just couldn’t get out of bed. But they were lovely because they gave me a bed in the hospital in the room with him – right to the end, yeah.

A carer’s story.

The doctor said that some of her organs were shutting down and that she had only a few months to live. Kylie visited her and asked what she wanted to do, who she wanted with her and where she wished to be… The woman wanted to go home and say goodbye to family and friends … she returned home in time to reconnect with family and share stories.

Clinical Services Coordinator Kylie recalls coordinating an End-of-life Journey for a renal patient.

They are getting better at sorting out the pain now. There was a time when I couldn’t get off the floor for two days, and they gave me something that didn’t agree with me at all. I was that sick. It was then that I thought ‘I’m ready to go’, and I got everyone to come down. That’s how bad I was. I now take a smaller tablet, and have a patch, and take some concentrated medicine instead. In the past two or three months I’ve only been sick one day.

A patient's story. From 'Gone Fishing'.

During end-of-life care, nursing care planning revolves around:

    • controlling symptoms
    • preventing or managing complications
    • optimising quality of life
    • helping the person, family, and carers prepare for death
    • ensuring the preferences and wishes of the person and/or their family are met.

image.png Tag Usage
Paragraph This is normally the default appearance of text
The button is present in the formats drop-down to assist in resetting the formatting if for instance it was pasted from another source and doesn’t look as the text normally does.
No Wrap This is used to prevent a short fragment of text wrapping between lines, it’s sometimes used to ensure “Dr Grongle Flomble” doesn’t split “Dr” and “Grongle” across lines.
This shouldn’t be needed very often but is available to help tweak content which is wrapping across lines in undesirable ways.
Introduction This makes the text of a paragraph slightly larger and more prominent, which is sometimes used to draw attention to an initial paragraph in a text area that summarises or otherwise leads into the remaining content. Aside This wraps content in a coloured box with a drop-shadow and moves it to one side such that it appears next to other content. Float Right
Aside This wraps content in a coloured box with a drop-shadow and moves it to one side such that it appears next to other content.
Float Right This allows something other than an image to float to the right of text, might might be useful for an image with a caption or a table.
It’s possible this one isn’t necessary.
Headers This makes text look like a different heading size to what it actually is, such that it can fulfill both the correct semantic HTML role and the desired appearance. For instance, an editor may want a heading which looks like an H5 for style reasons, but an H5 would be incorrect for the page because there is no H4.
Buttons Allows links to take on a button-like appearance.
Two Column List Allows a long list to be split across two columns (dot points run down the first column then down the second column, approximately evenly balanced between the two) to reduce the amount of scrolling required to read through.
Two Columns Like the two column list, but applied to paragraphs.
Lightbox Video This is used for alternative language translations below a video.
Downloadable Causes a link to a file to download that file rather than open it in a new tab.
